It doesn't matter providing you are listening to either lossless 2-channel music or at most 5.1 compressed AC3 <640 kb/s total or DTS 1536 kbit/s total streams. If you have more channels (7.1) or lossless multichannel audio then the optical cable cannot carry the signal (not enough bandwidth/not licences to carry it).
