Thanks guys, but the biggest problem appears to be the installer - LMS appears to be listed as installed software (Start > System tools > Software...) but t's not running. If I restart the machine, then LMS no longer appears as installed software at all..!
I am running Lubuntu 16.10 (32-bit). Would trying another version of Linux work..? My machine is an Intel Atom netbook so I fear a heavy-duty install of Ubunto might slow it down too much - is this fear justified..?
