I run a samsung T5 500gb ssd attached directly to my pi4, Formatted ext4. Works every-time. I've not done a throughput test, but this is my build computer, and it handles compiling jobs just fine. Trim support is not real good on this drive. But yes M.2 drives (Or rather the enclosures) are very problematic on the RPI boards.
