Well, as I understand it, the bootloader EEPROM is being updated with
regard to offering the USB boot facility as a (simple) option. It has
been at "Stable" status for a while now).

I don't think it does much for a SD card.

I run my LMS on a Samsung M3 USB disk, connecting to a rpi4b.

The rpi4b starts to soft throttle at about 80oC, I would
think that it should still function correctly.

Maybe open a browser tab for the CPU temperature and just look at it
periodically.

Why the rpi drops off the web gui I don't know. Look in the server log
for any messages.

It might help to reserve the IP address of the rpi in your router.
