I just connected the new M.2 SSD to a Windows laptop (I removed the rigid USB link and used a male-to-male USB3 cable), so that I could use Western Digital's Dashboard software to inspect the drive. I learned that, under Windows at least, the drive+adapter support TRIM and UASP. That was all I was able to check, because Windows doesn't recognise the EXT4 partition on the drive. So it seems like I need to investigate further on the RPi. Maybe I'll give a Raspberry Pi OS installation a go.
