My low-tech solution to delete the extra SD Card backup files was to shut down the Pi, remove the USB hard drive, and connect it to my Windows 10 machine. No problem deleting the files.
My guess, which is probably not quite right, is the "Create File Mode" code 0775 that is mentioned in the PiCore Documentation to set up a USB drive and set-up Samba. I have seen other people use different codes. I am not sure what the differences are. thanks for the help.
