David, one thing I need to clarify that I realize I didn't, rereading my post. Just grab any thumb drive and throw 5-20 songs on it. Just as a test. Mount it, scan it, see if you get more than zero. Then you will know. Once you can scan 1 or more, you know you can scan everything. I realize that you are thinking a large enough thumb drive for your whole library... Also, regarding power supply - I hope I was clear to make sure your rpi power supply is a good one. I am sure there are good after market on.es, but when I built my first picore, the good people here were insistent that I buy the "official" supply.
