Greg, I have noticed this on my PowerTower Pro as well. It is not big problem for me either as I have a volume knob on my speaker as well.
I have also never be able to get a microphone to work when connected to the mic port in X. In 9 the mic works fine but in X it doesn't. Probably just another Unsupported hardware issue.
