1: Apple and ATI, like any companies, are doing what they do to make
money.
2: Apple does not support some machines running X, so why should ATI?
3: Apple is a hardware company, and the smaller the hardware base to
program for is the most productive.
Has Apple stopped anyone from using X on unsupported machines? No, it
works to Apple's advantage, if you try X on an unsupported machine
then you just might by new hardware from them.
4: ATI can only support machines properly supported by the computer
manufacturer. Does Apple make any money from machines they sold
7 years ago? So why spend more R&D money on them?
5: ATI has put the beginnings of support in the Radeon PCI series of
cards for unsupported machines, a side effect do to the similarities in
the respective graphics hardware of such machines. Excellent people,
starting with Ryan, are donating their time to make it possible for
people to run X to the maximum on unsupported machines.
6: Users put X on unsupported machines and try harder to make it work as
a labor of love.
Unsupported machines are just that, unsupported. If we can make
something work that is not supposed, then great, but flaming companies
for doing what comes naturally is a waste of time and energy. It's
foolish to put ourselves into a position that we expect others to get
'save' us. We all have to take responsibility for our own actions, not
use others as our scape goats.
Personally, I bought my 7300 with all intentions of running X on it. I
set out to save money by not buying a new machine and to give myself a
challenge. I don't expect fireworks, I need a machine that gets the job
done, if it can do more than that then great. In fact, my machine has
less incompatibilities then some of the new machines running X.
Just my 2 cents...
