Hi all,
I have been lurking around in the background on this list for a couple
of weeks. Having played/worked with OS10 on a new machine for about a
month, I am finally ready to try installing it on a 9600.
I understand that OSX can be a lot more picky about RAM chips than
previous versions of the OS. I have an "unknown" mixture of chips in
the 9600, many of which have zero identification as to size,
manufacturer, etc. Some were in the machine when I got it (used), some
came out of an 8500, and a couple from a UMAX we own. Lots of people
have RAM chip problems. I apparently have always been blessed by the
RAM gods, as whatever I put in the 9600 works. The machine has been
running OS 9.1 for around a year, with no problems. Should I worry
about the odd mixture of RAM? Or, should I run some sort of RAM chip
test?
Here is a brief rundown of what I will be working with:
9600 with a Sonnet G3/400 upgrade
368 MB RAM
18 GB SCSI internal hard drive
60 GB IDE internal hard drive (connected to ATA card)
original Apple CD-ROM and Floppy drive
internal Zip drive
original Apple installed TwinTurbo PCI card
ATI Radeon Mac Edition PCI card
Sonnet Tempo ATA100 PCI card
OrangeMicro combo USB/Firewire PCI card
AppleVisions 17" monitor connected to the Radeon
Apple 15" monitor connected to the TwinTurbo
(numerous external connection stuff - not listed)
The OrangeMicro USB/Firewire PCI card will probably get swapped for a
Sonnet Tango combo card (currently in our UMAX) Sonnet appears to have
a firmware update for their card. OrangeMicro has not released anything
new for their card.
Any words of wisdom before I proceed?
