I am running my web server on OSX using a pretty stock 9500. The only upgrade was bumping the memory to 256MB. It is very responsive as a lightly loaded server (OS 10.1.4, Apache, PHP, mysql). I haven't upgraded to 10.1.5 because I would have to take it down (Over 100 days of up time so far). A little slow compared to my iBook as a GUI.
If all you want to do is play with it all you need is memory. If you are using the GUI a lot you will probably want to upgrade it.
