I agree, except that the update packages Apple puts out for OS X can't be installed on Darwin. If Apple says with its previous policy, a new Darwin release will not come out until 10.3, and no updates in between. The OS X code updates are not pushed out to the Darwin CVS with any urgency, even if you choose to use the Darwin CVS to keep your machine up-to-date. So unless you are comfortable with downloading and compiling security updates from source, I would not recommend Darwin (or if the security of your machine is not a issue). I run YDL on just such a machine. It handles all the e-mail for our company, as well as running a web cache/proxy and print spooling (with a 100-base-T card). >Adding faster disk interfaces, faster cpus, and >faster graphics cards can make the machine a useful modern workstation - >but for a basic server these things are largely irrelevant. After all, >if you're serving over the built-in Ethernet (about 1 MB/s), why would >you need an ATA-100 disk? When your system does go into swap, a faster disk is noticably better. Whenever you spawn a new process (ie. someone checks their mail), a faster disk is better. Whenever a library needs to be loaded, a faster disk is better. Also, throughput is not the only measure of disk speed. A faster disk usually has better seek times, and on a server that can make a difference in apparent responsiveness, even over a slower network link. -- Charles Dostale System Administrator Silver Oaks Communications http://www.silveroaks.com 824 17th Street Moline IL USA 61265 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 309-797-9898 -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:UnsupportedOSX@;mail.maclaunch.com> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:UnsupportedOSX-off@;mail.maclaunch.com> For digest mode, email: <mailto:UnsupportedOSX-digest@;mail.maclaunch.com> Subscription questions: <mailto:listmom@;lemlists.com> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
