Could it be that Apple removed the 604 code to make OS X run faster on
supported processors?

When I set up a Linux machine, one of the first things I do is recompile
the kernel to remove support for hardware I don't have. This _always_
improves performance for me. I would think even though the OS X kernel has
a much different architecture (mach), some of the same principles apply.
