Almost certainly. The extra CPU Load that Jaguar exerts on lesser
systems probably forced their hand though, as well as the need to kick
OS X up the proverbial ass to get it faster.

Yeh, it's noticeable that the kernel boots into OS X's GUI faster and
the OS itself loads a lot faster than 10.1.5 (it's as fast to boot as
Windows XP on my K6-2 500 now :) ). I wouldn't be surprised to see
support for the Beige G3s dropped with the next major iteration (10.3?)
of OS X, removing the need for the Old World support and different Old
World version of BootX as well as the onboard SCSI, personality card
and DVD support for those models. No fear though I'm sure XPostFacto
will still be able to dodge it since they can't really pull G3 support
totally, too many ppl are on iMacs an iBooks that even now are less
than 6 months old (and iBooks are still new).

One thing Apple doesn't do is drop support for a practically new
product within 3 years. It took 4 years for the last 604e machine
(9600/8600/7600) to become unsupported in the latest OS and another 6
months on top of that for OS support to cease altogether for it (9.2.1
did not support non-OS X machines).
