I'm looking to play DVDs on my mac. Specs are as follows:

9600/300
450 XLR8 G4/450
768MB RAM interleaved
Original Radeon PCI/32 DDR
U160 29160N

I have a few questions:

1. Can you play back DVDs through an unsupported mac in OS X?
2. Is 50MHz bus and/or 450 MHz CPU too slow for DVD playback in OS 9
or X?
3. Can I use Apple DVD player, vlc or something else?
4. Does hardware DVD decoding (Rage 128 daughtercard) make any
difference in performance over software decoding?

I had video frameskipping problems playing HQ DivX files. I tried
playing back the same file on a B&W g3/450 and there were no frame
drops. i have superior hardware in every way to that machine (video
card, CPU, hard drive/controller) except the 50 vs. 100 MHz bus.

I want to know if playing video straight off a DVD will offer a
solution to my frameskipping problem. I'm looking to buy a 10X
slot-loading DVD SCSI-3 drive. I have a Rage 128 w/DVD decoding
daughtercard at my disposal if that would be better than my Radeon for
DVD playback/decoding.

Thanks for any experience or insight in this area. Any amount of detail
is fine, since I am a beginner in DVD on a mac.
