If plugging the original keyboard back in restores functionality, 
you've got two bad keyboards or bad ADB cables.  I'm running OSX on my 
trusty old AppleDesign Keyboard and have never had a problem like yours.

If plugging in the old keyboard doesn't work, then you've got a blown 
ADB chip on the logic board or the one ADB cable you're using is bad.
