Meanwhile, I've now tried booting the Tsunami from an alternative OS X disk, which was built with Puma (patched to 10.1.5). No problems with any Sonnet cards: G3/400, G4/405, and G4/800 all boot and run fine, though I can't configure the G4/800 cache using Ryan's utility. So the other puzzle still remains: why is Puma indifferent to which variant of the cpu is installed, but Jaguar refuses to boot with the G4/800?
I'll try reinstalling Jag under the control of the G4/800, and see if that makes a difference.
Note, BTW, that Apple has a tradition of sneaking software patches into hidden partitions on hard drives. It may be that Jag, or one of its recent updates, puts something which is cpu-specific in a hidden area of the HDD. While not unprecendented, this would - obviously - be a bit of a bummer.

Puzzled by two results:Doesn't Sonnet have a utility called X-tune up that's supposed to enable the L3 cache ?
1. Although I can activate the standard backside L2 cache on my earlier
Sonnet cards (G3 750/400 @ 8*50; G4 7400/405 @ 9*45) using Ryan's L2
configuration utility, this does not seem to understand and configure
the backside L3 cache as found on a 7455 cpu card. Hence the new card
seems to run somewhat hobbled under OS X Puma. Nor does PowerLogix cache
control utility understand these cpus yet. Can other people confirm that
this is indeed the case? That the Sonnet 800 PCI card is not fully
active under OS X Puma?
Maybe I'm wrong...
I'd love to have one of those cards, and would love to know how and if they actually work... With a 400 G3 there's not much point to going to a 450 G4 and the next jump is to the 700/800 mhz Sonnet cards. Even on ebay the 450 G4s still fetch a lot of money...
