Damn. Seems pretty well unanimous that my non-functioning iTunes has
nothing to do with having no built-in USB.

Maybe one of those System files I deleted to squeeze all that OS onto
my teeny one gig drive was actually important. 8)

Yes, I confess, I ransacked the Library and the System judiciously
deleting things in order to make room for that combo update. This is
not normally something anyone should really just guess at, but my
judgement as to what I think I can get away with seems to be pretty
good so far. That was my area of expertise with OS 9, I was the guy who
knew exactly how lean you could run it. After all my apps ALL work now
except for the one music app, and I have plenty of alternatives to that
one (unless I get an iPod). I thought I had got away scot-free, even
though all-told I reduced the Library from close to 80MB to more like
20-30MB, and I reduced the System from around 500MB to the low 300s. I
didn't touch any of the invisible UNIX files (like bin, sbin, or usr,
even though there's another few hunnert MB in there), because I intend
to use this system to learn UNIX and I want it totally intact. Plus my
judgement ain't so good there. The Mac side, I can afford to shave. (I
bet the problem was a couple of items I removed from the Kernel
extensions that I wasn't too sure about, they were the dodgiest I think
-- guess I'd better visit my friend's Jaguar installation and fetch a
bunch of those files back.) Yup. Played with fire. Got singed. But made
it!!!

In fact, I wanted to go even more radical. I *itched* to delete
everything that pertained to USB and FireWire, since I have neither and
would like to conserve memory, but I figured that these technologies
are so integrated today that removing their drivers would be a fool's
quest and I refrained -- but one day when I am less frustrated by the
enormity of this task, I will back everything up and try shaving it all
even closer to the bone. I think there's a lot more that can go once
I'm feeling a little bolder about it. But for now I focused on
resources that I figured would likely not even be requested by pathname
(assuming to some degree that one can trust the efficiency of
programmers) unless the required hardware has already been detected,
like ATI drivers or GeForce drivers. And of course most of the built-in
desktops had to go, and ALL of the built-in screensavers. And there was
way, way more. I can't even remember which ones might have affected
iTunes. Well I got here, but now I have my work cut out for me. I might
come out of this with a list of some things you can safely delete (or
move) from the System and Library and still run everyday apps, which
could be useful.

Paul.
