Hello everyone.

I'm new here.

I have an 8500/Sonnet G3/400 as a stop-gap until I get my next G4 (G5?). I
tried reverting to OS 9 but after about 20 mins - and my first system-wide
freeze, installed 10.2.

I had a KP almost immediately, which didn't bode well. I thought that that
was going to be the general deal but I was wrong. Since then it's been 100%
stable (Uptime 240 hours +) until...

I'd been struggling with 160MB of RAM, and discovering a 64MB DIMM
'borrowable' from another machine, I put that in, and subsequently had about
5 KP's. Within 24 hours. I removed it and all's been well. (Uptime 96 hours
and counting) despite the fact this DIMM seemed fine under OS 9

It seems that OS X is as fussy about RAM in these Old World machines, as it
is in the newer ones.

(I swapped the 64MB DIMM with another stick from the same machine. Now I
have 224 MB RAM installed and the whole experience is much better - far less
disk thrashing... In fact I suspect that the single biggest factor in terms
of poor performance on this 8500 is limited RAM. OS X runs well and is
acceptably responsive - all things considered - until some app (usually a
browser) starts paging out lots of memory to disk, and then its thrash city,
and general (associated) slowdowns....)

Also, I have a generic Firewire card, and via this OS X burns to my Formac
(Lito-On 24X) CDRW without problem.

ITunes plays MP3's fine, and I have Sound Out through the mini-jack (haven't
tried Sound In, or the (RCA) phono's....

My only problem is printing to my Epson 760 USB. 'A communication error has
occurred...' The printer can be teased to appear in the Print Center but
trying to print, all I get is an exclamation mark and a failed print job. -
this despite the fact that the same (generic) USB card runs my MS Optical
mouse without incident (though it won't see my Canon A40 camera...)

Any ideas?

Regards

Rew
