I've been using an Epson Color 880 via a generic USB card with zero problems except that it's a little pricey for ink, so I'd like to cut costs.
A friend gave me an old HP Laserjet 4m and a Farallon Etherwave Print Adapter. I can't find any manuals for either, but the Laserjet works fine from OS 9.1 using the Appletalk JetDirect card and printer port. I read that the printer port doesn't work in 10.2, and I've tried, but none of the software configuration buttons are highlighted, so I guess the printer port doesn't load or work? My question is: Since 10.2 says it supports the LaserJet 4, and I have installed the HP drivers from the 10.2 disk, will I still need Gimp Print & Ghostscript ? (the LJ 4 is a Postscript level 2 that is supported in OS X 10.2). Is the Etherwave a good idea, or should I try to get an HP JetDirect ethernet card for the printer? What is the default IP address for the Etherwave, and will it need special configuration off a DHCP router? Also, the memory is only 6mb in the LJ 4, will more memory be worthwhile? Thanks!
