I guess we got off onto ink prices. I'm not that concerned about ink. I was mainly trying to get this LaserJet 4m working under 10.2.3 via Appletalk over Ethernet by using a Farallon EtherWave (EtherMac) Print Adapter. I've now got it working, and I'll outline what I did so that hopefully it will be archived, and others won't have as much effort since information on both the LaserJet 4m and the EtherWave is very sparse on the web. This would seemingly apply to other appletalk to ethernet print adapters such as the Asante, and any appletalk printers.
The LaserJet 4m is a Postscript level 2 and is supported in 10.2, and I have not installed or used GimpPrint or GhostScript. The Farallon EtherWave Print Adapter appears to work passively and requires no setup or software that I can tell. The key element as far as I can tell is to use a crossover cable from the DHCP router port (or your computer's ethernet jack as the case may be) to the Print Adapter. The Print Adapter then uses the 8-pin DIN Appletalk plug into the LaserJet or other Appletalk printer. In System 9.1 you must configure the AppleTalk control panel to not use the printer port, but rather ethernet. In OS X 10.2, Appletalk is under the System Preferences in the Network Preferences. It should be "active" and set on "ethernet". Open the utility Print Center and click "add printer" followed by selecting connect via "Appletalk" and Print Center will query and automatically add LaserJet 4 to the Printer List. I chose "configure automatically" and it went and found the PPD and other options, which I accepted or changed, and voila, a LaserJet is added and working. I added the HP drivers from the 10.2 install disc #2 prior to attaching anything, and I think these drivers may be preferable to the HP Legacy Installer versions available for download which I believe are better for OS X 10.0-10.1.5. (This is also true for ATI 7000 video cards, the 10.2 drivers on the CD are preferable to the Oct. 2002 (0210) drivers I believe).
As for my 6mb memory, I've got to think I'll look to get more. The first two items I printed were black & white 8 x 10 photos and it was at least 2 minutes before any printing started. I printed several other pages, and they look a little light in tone, but perhaps there's an adjustment or new PPD that will solve that minor problem. I'm just happy to have an old appletalk printer working over ethernet. Kris Tilford

AFAIR the LJ4 is picky about RAM. Some 72-pin SIMMs are recognised and will work. Others just won't. In principle you can use SIMMs of various sizes (certainly 4 MB and 16 MB) but you may struggle to coax them into life.

In the Mac-compatible version, one SIMM slot holds a PostScript interpreter in ROM, and another slot holds a 4 MB SIMM to build up RAM from the basic 2 MB.

HP used to have downloads of configuration tools for their printers. These would work under OS 9, and perhaps under Classic. They allow you to do stuff like rename printers, adjust print-density, and so on.

The Canon engine in the HP 4 series is good for many miles of 600dpi. Same engine in Apple's LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630, so you can swap cartridges and other spares at a pinch.
