most likely the card has to have something connected to it and terminated to function correctly. without termination it's probably picking up noise and messing up the bus. some macs work better with a terminator plugged into the back in absence of external drives for the same reason, even though one end is terminated and the scsi chip is supposed to magically know when to terminate the other end, i.e., the auto termination isn't always perfect or as good as manually putting a terminator on the external bus.
