I'm completely happy with my sonnet G3/500/1meg in my 8600.
running 10.2.6 & 9.2.2 without any gliches and "speed" is fine in 10.2.6 and great in 9.2.2.
The installs were painless (xpostfacto & os9helper)
Although I'm with you on going forward - I rarely ever boot 9 or even use classic anymore.
I'm also running an ata 133 with several drives (40&60 giggers) and can boot systems anyway I like.
9.2.2 is on the old 6 gig scsi drive and 10.2.6 is on one of the drives connected to the ATA.
Also run a gig of ram, an ata exclaim vr pro (16 megs of vram) the original 24x cdrom & a 12x scsi cdrw (internal - pitched the zip), a 5 port usb card, and an additional (cyclone) cooling fan in one of the lower 3 unused pci access slots. 17in 750av monitor - this machine remains my main workhorse. If for no other reason than it's rock solid stability. no crash, no freeze, no " hey I can't do that" messages....
IMO > For what they want for that 800mhz card, I would just assume go and buy a newer (used) machine with a faster bus and do the upgrade path on that, and that new 1 gig upgrade is completely useless for the $. I also have noticed used Zif prices declining recently also. - at least the G3's
I have also have a Beige G3 dt' here that I'm currently not impressed with.It was upgraded with a 350 zif and over clocked to 400, minor speed bump to the bus also.but WILL NOT INSTALL 10.2.6 even if I return it to it's 100% stock configurations, runs 9.2.2 & 10.1.5 with no problem, av model, 768 ram, exclaim 3D pro, 48x sony cdrw, originally rev b 266, 40 gig & 60 gig drives, 5 port usb, cyclone fan, and dual monitors - one 17in 750av and a 17in 1710. This box actually also runs rock solid, I just wish I could get 10.2.6 installed on it. I've tried everything. All the troubles with the 10.2.6 install has really got me peeved. So I end up not really using it much. it will go through the whole install process and then on the restart, it just keeps restarting over & over
any thoughts?
