Why in the heck did Apple make it so friggin' hard to delete common files in this OS? I know that UNIX is UNIX, but they could have disabled these kind of pain-in-the-butt things. I guess they didn't feel like it, eh?
Because you ran into an anomaly, you should have been able to delete the files by typing (in a command line) 'sudo rm <filename>'
Apple did not enable the root account (actally root exists and is enabled, it just cannot log in) because that makes life a *lot* simpler from a security standpoint.
