Steve,

I have a 9600 (orig 233 so not mach 5) with G3 300, 448MB RAM and 7k as my only graphics card driving a 17" LG LCD via DVI. I do not have the audio stuttering issue you mention - and 4 of my PCI slots are loaded (ATA 100 card, Firewire/USB, Fast SCSI, TV Tuner) but I do have an anomaly under 10.1.5 in that I have spinning beach ball in top left corner as well as normal cursor (which is often spinning beach ball with only a G3 300 ;-) ). This is being driven with Radeon Oct 02 update, standard firmware and no other hacks apart from XpostFacto.

It sounds like you have a back ground process running under X that's eventually grinding Mac to a halt. What X tuning have you done, try removing things that you may never use such as Apache web server components, SCSI card drivers, airport drivers, etc, etc. Wilst I primarily run as OS 9.1 I have messed around manually with some of this stuff and OSX seems happy when you remove these things - worst case scenario is you can boot via CD and return files you removed however, I found it much easier to do it whilst running 9.1 as OSX isn't running and therefore less likely to crack the [EMAIL PROTECTED] by removing running process files.

Similarly try using MOX Optimiser as well.

As an aside what is the G4 800 like as an upgrade solution? post me direct if you want to take that part of discussion off forum. Does this solution give you a very usable MAc or one that still struggles to run X fast enough to consider a permanent change on 9600 - otherwise G5 might be in order.

Regards
