Currently I am running Panther on my 7600 based G3 using Ryan Rempel's latest beta of XPF and his L2 Cache Config app. Of late I have had OSX hang upon boot when it tries to read the L2 cache settings (I still boot in verbose mode--it's the linux geek in me). A warm restart boots me fine but then the L2 cache is offline and I have to reenable it with the utility.

I have the same problem on a 7300 (Powerlogix G4/450) but not on my 9600 (Sonnet G4/700). If you download powerlogix cache utility, it works. It also allows you to fine-tune the setup, my advice is to use the defaults for your G3 card - unless of course you want to play.

XPF 3a09 (& earlier) seem to be very picky about caches, which may explain the difference between the Sonnet & the powerlogix board.

On a different note, I have had some problems getting Panther, but not Jaguar, to install & run on the 7300. It works now, but I have noticed using the verbose mode, that there are problems recognizing the built-in SCSI. If you go to System profiler and look at SCSI, you will see that none is recognized. As all my drives are SCSI, they are being used, but apparently not recognized as such. This may very well be one of the reasons some folks have been having problems installing & running Panther. Question is what are the differences between Jaguar (no problems) & Panther in this respect.

I have not yet posted to the XPF board on this, but I will.

p.s.: Some people have noted that XPF doesn't always set cache at optimum, for obvious reasons the Powerlogix utility will.
