I'm trying to build a quiet desktop machine for some audio work.
A problem with many recent machines is that they generate so much energy that they need many fans, which means more noise and yet more energy. I want a machine with PCI slots and minimal moving parts. So far, I'm leaning towards:
9500 Sonnet G4/450 (no fan) ATI 7000 (no fan) Sonnet tempo trio ATA133 with USB/Firewire (no fan) Audio interface in PCI (no fan) Fast Ethernet if I want it later (no fan) SCSI disk for booting Pair of Maxtor DiamondMax ATA drives for data (alleged to be quiet)
That would give noise from just the disks and the psu.
I'm a great believer in minimal energy machines. I might have to accept that I can't get a sufficiently quiet PCI machine, and convert to a different way of working (PowerBook or Cube with FireWire to outboard audio?). But I've managed to build a full server from an old G3 desktop tricked out with Tempo card and new disks. That's providing 250G of quiet always-on storage from a 150W psu, which keeps down the environmental impact - not to say the electricity bills. Such things are possible.
Any other suggestions?
