What does it really take to play DVD (full-screen or large window)
on your monitor?

....

I've got an 8500 with Sonnet G4/450 running 10.2.8 very nicely. Lots
of SCSI disk both inboard & outboard, Firewire and USB1.1/2.0 combo
card (haven't tried the FW yet though...no peripherals...gotta borrow
a friend's FW CDR burner or something.

I see reports (on OWC's CD/DVD installation pages and elsewhere) that
suggest that by putting a Radeon 7000 PCI into such a configuration,
one might be able to view DVDs (perhaps with iDVD; probably with the
VideoLan player) from a Firewire DVD player/writer (like the Pioneer
DVR-106D); perhaps even cut data and video DVDs with Toast 6. (I also
gather that iDVD 3 is intentionally crippled to refuse to write to
external writers, even when their mechanisms are "fully supported" by
10.2.8 and 10.3.x. ...but perhaps patchable...Gack!)

Has anyone had any experience with either
Radeon 7000 plus ATA card, ATA DVD player/writer interface
or
Radeon 7000 plus Firewire card, Firewire DVD player/writer interface
on 'ancient' upgraded machines?

I really don't want to spend the bucks only to find out that it won't
work at all...or that the PCI bus on those machines won't hack the
transfer rate, and so the DVD playback is full of glitches!

(Of course it's fairly cheap to replace my base machine with a
Sawtooth or later, upgrade the built-in DVD to a R+-RW+- writer if I
want to, add a SCSI controller card and move my disks over. Maybe
that's the rational and cost-effective way to go!)

....

  Cheers & Merry Christmas, --Lee
