CPU bus on Mach 5 is 100mhz where as on others it's 50mhz (yes this is not MBoard Bus rate but CPU bus rate) This is why apple discontinued the 9600/350 as is was faster than the Beige G3s of the time in many tasks. They then later reintroduced it to the market after G3 speed was ramped up.
They are both listed as being a Kansas M/Board but the Gesalt ID (I have no idea what this is?!) are listed as 67 and 105
So, my point is that this might be where the problems are occuring with 8GB limit - as a stab in the dark I suspect the Mach 5 version M/board is very similar (or maybe more closely related to 8600 250 & 300) to Beige G3 M/Board.
Now all our unsupported Macs are frankenstien machines so nobody is likely to have the same config exactly and this also will play a roll in incompatibilities. It's what the PC world deals with daily.
Food for thought, some of us are not as brilliant as others but we are all here for a common cause - to convince our out of date hardware to run Apples most modern OS...............
