That's what I felt like :-)

9600 is the server. The powerbook and G4/AGP are just machines I've been
using to connect to it.

The direct (wired) connection of the laptop <-> 9600 seems to show that it
is -not- a duplex problem, since by trying all settings with the laptop the
effects of duplex mismatch are very obvious. Much worse than the 100M
falloff compared with the airport setup (laptop-airport-switch-switch-9600)

The best performance from the server is indeed the 'airport' one where the
intermediate 54M connection seems to bring the rate down to what the 9600
Asante 10/100 interface can handle.

So in order of performance (using the laptop as a client)

best
Laptop<->airport<->switch<->switch<->9600

medium
Laptop(10M/fdx)<->switch<->switch<->9600
Laptop(10M/fdx)<->9600

poor
Laptop(100M/fdx or auto)<->switch<->switch<->9600 or
Laptop(100M/fdx or auto)<->9600

Glacial
Laptop(100M/hdx)<->9600

There are several other machines attached to the switches, which all whizz
along at 100M, all set on auto (if set at all). Even a plain old 7600/120
with its original disk and an old 10/100 card gets twice the throughput of
the souped up 9600

My suspicion is that it is the Asante590 card in the particular setup in the
9600. Unfortunately I've not got any other OSX compatible 10/100 cards to
try.

If all else fails I can use the built in 10M Ethernet on the 9600, but it
seems it -should- be able to do much better...

bye for now
