faxing on beige G3, panther, with ext. modem

Hello. Did a search on the archives but didn't come up with anything.  
Has anyone been able to use the Fax feature in Panther on an 
unsupported machine with an external serial modem.  Mine's a Supra 
Express 56k.  When I attempt to do so, in the Fax list, it doesn't show 
up.  Am I missing something?
