I did panther it with a s900, same radeon card, fw and usb pci cards - and it's working fine when isolated thus rams what dont werk with x
if it freezes while booting into the x installer disk the soldered onboard cache could be a problem. To switch it off u'll need to place a jumper (somewhere between ram and cpu slots - or the hardcore way, by soldering a brick (or a jumper socket like I did)
anyway, to send u some luck, my s900 runs panther well with 2 monitors on the radeon card - even w/ one dinosaur fixed frequency of them
