Hi

After coming back to the problem of the slow Asante 10/100 ethernet
performance I asked about a while ago, I've found out what was wrong.

Looking at what kexts were being loaded (in system profiler) I saw that that
OSX (10.3.3) was using the Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext extension, and was not
loading the AsanteFAST extension.

Manually removing the Apple extension and reinstalling the Asante one has
returned network performance back to what it should be. The Apple extension
is inside the contents/plugins folder inside of the IONetworkingFamily.kext
extension which lives in System/Library/Extensions

Just for the record (and anyone searching for info) my original question is
below

-=-=-=-=-=-
I've a 9600 with sonnet g4/450 and ATA133 card running very nicely as a
file/print server (10.2.8)

The network weirdness comes in moving files to/from 10.3 machines over 100M
Ethernet

Desktop machine (G4 agp) at 10 meg - good
Laptop (g4/1.25) 54M airport - even better
Laptop or desktop at 100meg - dismal (runs in little bursts)

Somewhere 'between' 54 and 100 the throughput plummets...

I've tried all the usual cabling/switch checks and everything checks fine.
I'm using an Asante 590 10/100 PCI card which does have osx drivers.

If someone out there is using a similar setup in a 9600 other than the
Ethernet card, and is getting good 100M transfers I'll get another card -
any recommendations on make/model?

There was a reference on an Asante list about having too many bus mastering
PCI cards causing problems?? I've never come across this one before on Macs
(other cards present are a belkin FW/USB card and the original ATI Mach64
card the machine came with)

bye for now
