Sorry about that Peter.  Here is the output of those
commands again, with "cd .." this time: 

I moved the home folders by copying them over to the
separate partition.  Then I changed the paths to the
various home folders in NetInfo   Then I delted the
original ones. Then I logged back in and it worked
beautifully.  It's been like that for months, but yes,
something has gotten trashed.  I know my data is all
there because I can browse through partition that
contains the home folders and eveything is there, and
in addition to that, when I boot up with the small
partition which has a clone of my real startup volume,
I boots up fine and all the users are correct and they
all have the correct settings, folders, content, etc. 
would it be helpful if I sent you the output of those
same commands when I'm in that cloned startup volume? 
I am running OS 10.3.5 and using a beige g3 upgraded
with a Sonnet 1GHZ G4 and of course, I'm using XPF, my
version is: 3.0a17.
