Dear List:

I recently posted a message on another list about the problems I was having
trying to install Jaguar on a Power Mac 7600. Eventually I did get Jaguar
installed and thought it was working well - or so I thought.

All the built-in apps appeared to be functioning normally. But when I tried
to perform the automatic OS X updates, the updates refused to install. So, I
manually downloaded the 10.2.6 Combo Update which installed perfectly well.
Next, I installed iTunes 4.7, which also installed perfectly well. I tried
downloading Safari 1.0, but it refused to install. Then when I manually
downloaded the 10.2.8 Update and tried to install it, disaster struck!
Toward the end of the installation process, the computer crashed.

I wiped the dedicated OS X drive, a Maxtor 160GB, and started all over
again. I partitioned the first 8GB on this drive and proceeded to install
Jaguar again. Each and every time I have tried to do this installation, the
computer keeps crashing. It occurred a few times early in the installation
process with the first disc. Later, it occurred toward the end of the
installation process with the first disc. In other instances, it
successfully did the installation from the first disc and then rebooted,
only to crash at the point with the grey Apple screen.

I took a screen shot of the boot up screen. You can view it at

My Power Mac 7600 is configured in the following way:

 1. 1 GB stock SCSI drive for OS 9.1.

 2. Maxtor 160 GB ATA drive (with 8GB partition for OS X).

 3. Stock SCSI CD-ROM drive.

 4. 2 OWC 128 RAM modules.

 5. SIIG Altra ATA/133 card.

 6. Sonnet G3 500 card.

Any suggestions about how to approach this challenge?

Roland :(
