That flat out won't work. 128 is the absolute minimum, 256 megs is a minimal usable system.
i don't really care about speed, i just want to go thru the install on an apple machine before i try the more frightful sounding panther install on an older upgraded clone.
You're going to go through the same install procedure, since you've got to use XPostFacto. In theory it's simple: Install XPF, reboot to the Panther CD and install.
In practice, well....

what about the format of the HD? does it matter if it's HFS or HFS+?
OS X will not install on a HFS disk. It has to be HFS+ or UFS, and UFS is cautioned against as a lot of OS X native apps won't work properly.
