Something to add:

The phantom Brother Laser HL-1440 shows up in Printer Setup Utility of all three desktops, and if you try to delete it, it will reappear spontaneously, so it must be on the network? My brother has a HP PSC-1210 All-In-One, but it's not a Laser, and not Brother, and normally not attached to his notebook, and probably not shared, so that's the only possibility within my house. I may just print something to this phantom printer asking whomever owns it to send me an e-mail.

More than likely one of your affluent, mooching neighbors have attached a Brother printer to their system, and it's being seen via Appletalk or Rendezvous.

Also, your lackadaisical attitude towards network security is frighteningly ignorant.

What would you do if someone coming from your IP address did something like email a threatening letter, hack a government or other important system, or logged onto a child porn sting site?

I'll tell you what you would do: you would lay down on the floor with your arms spread like the nice men wearing black body armor and carrying machine guns told you to.

If you're LUCKY, it'll just be a some FBI agents or police detectives at the door, with a search warrant to take your computers, and possibly you, into custody.

At the least set up your wireless router to only give connections to the MAC addresses of your wireless cards, enable WEP, and limit the number of allowed connections to the number of wireless systems you run at any given time.

This isn't foolproof against a determined hacker, but like a club on the steering wheel, it's enough to usually send them off to a easier mark.
