According to what I read about that, you see the biggest improvement in 10.1 (&10.1), some in 10.2, and little or none in 10.3, so that could be why. If you're running 10.2 or earlier I'd give it a shot, you can always remove it if you don't see any difference.

The software I tracked most of them down to was CheckMate (a checksumming system software program) but I did remove grackleprobe, didn't seem to affect anything.
