I had moderate success with 9600 w G3/300, 448MB RAM, 40 GIG 7200rpm ATA 100 main drive with 10.1, through a combo USB/Firewire card.
I suspect the bulk of the problem to have been 10.1 and perhaps G3/300 card (although it was fine in OS9 on same config), I;ve since upgraded main Mac to G5 and although 9600 now runs Jaguar I haven't done anything serious with it (apart from help recover G5 when Apple broke it with one of their firmware updates!!)

I find the performance of iMovie 4 highly suspect even on a supported Pismo 400 G3 PowerBook. However, it might be that I'm seeing artificial limits caused by the early-model FireWire controller in the Pismo. Still, given bus and interface limits, I can't see that I'm going to do better on an unsupported 7600 or 9600, even using a G4 800 cpu.
So if you have successfully edited video with iMovie on an unsupported box, please say what kit you used.
