I have a beige g3 desktop with a 1ghz g4 processor and 640mb of ram. I'm using iMovie 5 and it's quite usable. i can't export to tape though with my firewire card. don't know why. before i could with a single fireward card, but since i switched to a combo card, i can't export to tape because it skips frames. still, i can export to idvd or quicktime and even burn the dvd with a pioneer dvd burner. imovie 4 worked too. imovie 3 was extremely slow, especially b/c i hadn't yet upgraded the processor. but even with the g4, it's much slower than 4 or 5. imovie 5 is a little faster than 4.

has anyone had solid success using iMovie to edit DV tapes using an

I edited a lot of footage with my PowerMac 8600 and its stock 604e CPU with iMovie 1.0.2 and Mac OS 9.1.

iMovie 2.1.1 sometimes stuttered on export to tape so I imported with v2.1.1 and exported with v1.0.2.

I then got a XLR8 G4 450 and rendering transitions etc was faster but iMovie behaved otherwise as with the 604e.

iMovie 3.0.3 was a total failure; playback was only a few frames per second.

On Mac OS 10.1.5 iMovie 2.1.2 was OK but for some reason with Mac OS X 10.2.8 it tended to freeze the Mac.
