Umm. I think what Liam is trying to point out is that QE over PCI doesn't work all that well, because it tends to saturate the PCI bus, as many of us have found. By contrast, QE over AGP is fine, because nothing else is competing for the AGP bus, because it is a private data highway between CPU and GPU (as it were).

YMMV. Which means that some people find QE over PCI ok (probably because they have no other devices plugged into PCI slots). Others may be okay because they have a six-slot m-board, with a (sort of ) split PCI design, so their graphics card is separate from any other PCI devices they have.

Personally, I got system freezes. When I turned off PCI Extreme they seemed to go away. So for now I live without it.

And you appear to misunderstand also.

[1] This isn't Panther's Quartz Extreme, which only accelerates window
compositing & passes huge textures to and from the graphics card over
the bus - which doesn't work well on PCI. QE doesn't support PCI for a
good reason.

Except that it does support PCI. All you have to do is turn it on. I have. It makes a big difference, including in 10.4.
