Upgraded X and now help won't work

Hi, I've just upgraded from 10.1.5 OSX to 10.2 using an upgrade disk. 
There are now two problems. Firstly the help system won't work. It just 
crashes everytime after trying to stat up. The other problem is that 
moving my mouse pointer across desktop backgrounds leaves small 
splotches of colour on the screen.

Is this a 'normal' consequence of an upgrade and is there a way around 
both these problems?
