This is my working theory right now, at least.
When I updated from 10.3 to 10.4 I did have some "issues" with my
home directory, which is located on another Partition (not volume).
The connection was lost and 10.4 insisted on adding a numeral '1' to
the name of the partition, but ONLY for the home directory. It had me
spooked for a while. I finally solved the problem by renaming the
whole partition holding my user directory, following which everything
was peachy.
The system is a 15" Al book with an 80 Gig Hd divided into 3
partitions. One (20G) is used for the operating system, the next 20G
contains my user directory and the last is for everything else. I
used Netinfo Manager to tell the system where the userdirectory was.
This has worked without trouble in 10.2 & 10.3. Now, I am not a
particular nix-guy, but I have programmed and played with Apples
since 1978 and Mac's for 10 years plus. I have served as a masocist
having had to use MS-DOS, OS2,CPM & varying forms of 'windoze' in
addition, so... I think I have had to extricate myself from a fair
amount of programmers revenge on the unvary.
Using Net Infomanager to set the home directory seems 'cleaner' than
by establishing a symbolic link, which I always have felt is prone to
funny surprises. Please enlighten if I am wrong.
I have not - yet - placed the system and the userdirectory on 2
different physical volumes/drives, but I am about to try on my 9600/
G4, which serves as my hobby platform. Yes I confess, beating non-
standard hardware & software into submission serves as relaxation
after dealing with patients, students, residents & administrators.
In short, you may have to rename the partition/volume you have your
userdata on, but if you set the user directory via Netinfo Manager,
after renaming the volume it is on, it seems to work quite well.
