I eventually removed the CDRW put the DVD back in, and took out the USB2 card. This time the install went fine, no problems.

Now I have to restore my old user directory and hope everything goes well.

Quick update: after restoring my old user directory (log out, log in as another admin user, use ditto to move my old user directory back to where it belongs, chown everything properly), I had a few issues with application support things that weren't in the Library, but otherwise it's been flawless since then.

I'm now 90% certain my problems are the old FW enclosure I had the DVD drive in.
