This is my first day on the list and this first post is a Doozie !
You read it right listers.!
The X box 360 will be highly powered and OS X has already been run
on original X Box game consoles.
The super chip in the 360 and the price make it a tempting unit.
With USB ports to plug in keyboards, etc and the ability to run OS
X and Linux
many will flock to this box as a high power Mac OS core unit..
The 360 is more highly powered than a Dual G5 !
Who put this Darkside news in my head ?
None other than list Mom Dan himself ! Read his MacMusing on the subject.
Dan even predicts the use of this as a video recorder. Now that's power !
FCP or iMovie on a high power ( get this irony) IBM chip !
Unsupported OS X taken to an entirely new dimension!
OS X won't run on an Xbox 360. At least, not out of the box.
Yeah, even I know that!
It might well be hacked onto it and there's always the potential of
Apple porting it, but it's not going to run out of the box.
Very much doubt Apple porting it ever.
Just because the Xbox 360 has a PPC processor doesn't really mean anything.
Doesn't have a PPC proc.
Plenty of different platforms have had the same processor but no
compatibility (Commodore 64/Apple II/Atari 8-bit, Mac/Atari
ST/Amiga, 68k Mac/68k Cisco Routers, etc) so it's way early to get
your hopes up.
No it's not .Read Dans " musing".
It's likely Microsoft will make it harder to mod the 360 as well,
after the problems (if you want to call them that) with modded
original Xboxes. The OS X that ran on the original Xbox was through
100% software emulation with PearPC so it's not really comparable.
Besides, the OS and the software has to be aware of the processors
for it to matter and one wonders what OS X would do with a
triple-core processor.
Yeah and XPostfacto was a dream once too. With naysayers comparable
to the present day.
That said, OS X on an Xbox 360 *would* be insanely cool, but it's
way early to be getting excited about it. Microsoft isn't likely to
support it themselves since they're still convinced OS X doesn't
exist. Apple probably won't since it'd destroy Mac Mini and maybe
even iMac and low-end PowerMac sales. This pretty much leaves it up
to your average hackers to do it. With Darwin being open source it's
possible that drivers and such could be written. I'd think it far
more likely that Microsoft would write a Windows XP Xbox Edition
before they'd push OS X. Guess we'll have to see!
Incidentally, I suspect most every Machead's first thought when
reading the Xbox 360 specs was "Ooooh, OS X" ;)
