For me, and some others, it was a nuisance that Tiger broke AppleShare
over AFP. It won't work from OS X, nor from Classic. But, in emergency,
I had a fall-back. I can dual-boot all my machines into OS 9. From OS
9's Chooser, old AppleShare servers were still accessible.
Not now. Since I patched to OS X 10.4.1, that's broken too. Three
machines (Pismo, iceBook, SawTooth), all experimentally running 10.4.1,
all when tested under Mac OS 9 now report an identical AppleShare
"System Error". Whatever new resources 10.4.1's Classic environment now
adds in, it's broken old AppleShare thoroughly.
The troublesome version is AppleShare 3.9.4, which I think gets put
there by Tiger. Mercifully, reverting to 3.9.3 (from a Panther box)
seems to fix things. Unfortunately, re-running Classic forcefully
re-installs the newer AppleShare, which breaks AppleShare under OS 9
once more.
Frankly, this ain't good enough. I'll accept that Apple has their
reasons for removing old features from new operating systems. I don't
accept they should bugger about with my working OS 9 environment. I can
probably patch together some solution to swap versions of AppleShare
using the old Extensions Manager, but why the hell should I?
It's difficult to know whether Apple has done this deliberately (=
malicious) or accidentally (= incompetent). Malicious or incompetent.
Which would you rather be?
