I checked the PRAM battery to see if that might be the cause, but the battery turned out to be fine. I tried resetting the CUDA, again to no avail. Is this machine toast? Any ideas about what's going on?

I remember this happening to my 7600 when I first installed OS X on it. What I did was remove the PRAM battery over night, press the cuda switch for 30 seconds , re-installed the PRAM battery and was able to boot up and keep going.
