Anytime you find yourself in the Denver, CO, area, you're welcome to see
an 8600 (with Sonnett G4/800) and a 7500 (with G3/350 in XLR8 ZIF
adaptor, overclocked to 417mhz). Those two, plus a B&W G3/450 here, are
all running OSX 10.4.3. The B&W is perceptably faster, but not by
much. The 8600 has the full iLife '05 loaded on it, and I use it for my
photo/video/audio work. The B&W is the web surfer and emailer, though I
also use the 8600 to access the web, mostly for software updates.
Screen draw speeds between the two over my dialup connection are pretty
close.
The 7500 I use at my 9-5 job, where it is the only Mac in the house.
It's connected to a Windows server, and I have to use MS Remote Desktop
Connection for Macs, which slows it down considerably, though it's still
faster than the 133mhz Pentium POS I was inflicted with before I brought
in this Mac. I love the dashboard calculator, mass convertor and
dictionary/thesaurus, functions I use on a regular basis. Everytime I
press "F12" and someone there sees it, they flip out.

X on a 9500? I'll beleive it when I see it! Joke aside, that 9500 of
yours must be accelerated. The Videocards is probably the trick. Had
one with Hardware acceleration (that came to me as "trickle down",
because it didn't work under X), which speeded up screen redraw a
lot. But the machine is still sloooow to surf (like drawing up an
Internet page). Thus under X it must be abysmally slow.... ;)
The 8500 is a pain in the neck to work with, mobo-wise. Lucky I had a
20-year old monitor-adjustment-tool (from my first computer), a long
plastic stick, suitable for reaching the otherwise unreachable
CUDA-button on the 9500 (and the 8600...).
The 8600 is quieter, has room for more RAM (I think...) plus it has
video & sound i/o. Thats why I want to revive it. Maybe I even can
get those ports to work under OSx with a processor upgrade...Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
