I'm jumping on this thread a bit late, but my experience with OS X and
my beige G3 MT was one of
frustration until I got a PCI video card for it.
It seems from the research I did that the onboard video chip causes
problems with the beige G3s and there
seems to be no fix for it that I found.
I wanted to use a higher res. than the onboard video would allow me to
use anyway so upgraded to a 32mb
ATi Radeon 7000 PCI card.
Since doing that the machine has been stable and worked flawlessly for
me for the most part.
I've not tried any other OS on it so far other than OS X 10.2, when I
get around to getting another hard drive or
a bigger one for it I may try either Linux or XPF and 10.3/10.4 on it
and see how it goes, but I suspect I am
more likely for now to stick with OS X 10.2 and wait till I can afford a
newer Mac that'll run 10.4.
