I don't know enough to judge - q.v. your observation that /etc/rc is
run by init. I /should/ have known that...

That I didn't know!

I will take your word; I haven't tried it. Until I had the feature to
play with, I couldn't see much use for it, so I never bothered
exploring, but when I first got Tiger I discovered that it was
actually really useful. Not bothered configuring it on the new machine
just yet, mind, but it is very early days.

I can see that that would be a problem. Apart from OpenOffice, though,
I've not used the Unix side of OS X at all, and I really just use
Spotlight for launching apps with. Perhaps as I use the machine more,
I will explore the features more, but I do not plan to give up
Thunderbird for Mail.app any time foreseeable.

YHM of the "ps" output you requested.

I am seeing some instability post-hack - Safari is dying a lot,
Firefox once, and the system is freezing in the BOINC screensaver - so
I might yet remove it again. Time will tell. I do take your point
about VM sizing, but it's a reasonable rule of thumb for me. Activity
Monitor suggested that I often had 3.5GB+ of VM in use but I have not
yet seen my VM file actually grow *at all* past its default 64MB.

I don't do image or video editing or any of that kind of thing that's
really heavily RAM-intensive - the most I do is lots and lots of tabs
in Firefox and sometimes many large images. I'm going to try to stress
the system a little bit and see. My last machine tended to freeze with
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as well, but then, it /was/ overclocked...
